NORWAY — Non-conference rivals Iron Mountain and Norway faced off in a softball doubleheader at Marion Park on Monday afternoon. It was the host Lady Knights who swept Iron Mountain, 15-0 in 5 innings and 13-4.

In game one, junior Kali Stanchina toed the mound for the Knights, fanning six, and not allowing a hit or a walk. She also cracked a team-high three hits, with teammates Hannah Burklund and Averie Popp also recording three hits.

Popp had two triples and 3 RBI’s, and Burklund had a trio of RBI’s as well. Sophomore Andi Carlson had two hits, including a double.

Clarie Mongrain pitched for Iron Mountain, fanning five batters.

“Norway is a very well disciplined team, that plays great softball,” said Iron Mountain head coach Bruce Tapio.

In game two, Burklund had 5 RBI’s and three hits, including a triple and a home run for the Knights. Taylor Adams also had three hits, while Elizabeth Rometti had two RBI’s.

Burklund and Carlson toed the mound, fanning three and allowing four hits combined. Donna VanHolla had two hits, including a double for Norway.

For the Mountaineers, Ellison Powell pitched six innings. The sophomore pitched for the first time in high school, and did a fine job, Tapio noted.

Tapio also noted fine defense by Sarah Tinkey of Norway in left field.

“Fifteen hits in game one against a quality pitcher — Mongrain — was nice to see,” said Norway head coach Bob Bal. “Shows me all the time that my assistants spent with batting tees and batting cage is really paying off. And Kali (Stanchina) is pitching really well, with no hits allowed in the first game.

In the second game, Norway’s Andi Carlson pitched five innings in her second mound appearance.

“Give IM credit, they’re battling the numbers game but they never give up,” Bal said.

Powell drove in two runs for the Mountaineers, and freshman McKinlee Peterson also had an RBI.

The Mountaineers will travel to Lodal Park to face non-conference rival Kingsford on Thursday. The Knights will travel to Niagara this afternoon for a recently added game, at 4:30 p.m.

Norway hosts non-conference foe Escanaba on Thursday.
